What to Wear for Summer Family Photos Without Looking Like You Tried Too Hard

Isn't that always the key?

Let me start by saying this: nobody needs to show up to family photos looking like they were styled for a catalog shoot.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is to look like yourselves on a really good day.

I think one of the biggest reasons people stress about family photos is because they assume outfits need to be complicated, expensive, matching, or deeply curated. They don’t. In fact, when clothing feels too forced, it usually shows.

Summer family photos should feel easy, comfortable, and like real life, just leveled up.

Start with Mom First

I know, I know. Everyone says this. But they say it because it works.

Choose something you feel good in. Not something you hope to fit into. Not something that needs constant adjusting. Not something you’ll be tugging at every five minutes.

A dress with movement is always a solid option, but it doesn’t have to be a dress. A great linen set, relaxed denim with a flattering top, or anything that makes you feel comfortable and like yourself works beautifully.

If you feel off, the whole thing feels off. Start with you.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Please do not put everyone in white shirts and khakis and call it a day.

Instead, think in a color palette. Soft blues, faded greens, warm neutrals, dusty pinks, creams, denim, muted earth tones. Colors that complement each other without being identical.

You want everyone to look like they belong together, not like they’re in a uniform.

Think Texture Over Prints

Summer light loves texture.

Linen, cotton gauze, eyelet, soft denim, knits, worn-in fabrics, anything with a little movement or depth photographs beautifully.

Large logos, neon colors, and busy prints tend to pull attention away from faces. A subtle stripe or small floral can work, but when in doubt, simpler is usually stronger.

Keep Kids Comfortable

This one matters more than people think.

If a child hates what they’re wearing, I will know within thirty seconds of arriving.

Choose clothes they can move in, sit in, run in, and forget about. Barefoot in the yard? Great. Rolled sleeves? Great. Slightly wrinkled because they’re real children? Also great.

You do not need tiny formalwear for this to work.

Shoes Matter More Than You Think

Athletic sneakers with neon trim can really shift the vibe.

Barefoot is often best for backyard sessions or beach sessions. Sandals, simple sneakers, boots, or neutral everyday shoes usually work great depending on the setting.

And yes, I fully support hiding Crocs until after we start.

Don’t Buy Everyone a Whole New Wardrobe

Sometimes people spend hundreds of dollars trying to solve a problem that didn’t exist.

Start in your own closets. Pull pieces you already love. Lay everything out together on a bed. You’ll often realize you already have what you need.

If you need one or two anchor pieces, great. But this does not need to become a shopping crisis.

Consider the Location

A backyard session might call for something relaxed and lived-in. A lake session may lean breezy and casual. A town session might support something a little more polished.

Outfits should make sense for where you’ll be. That’s part of what makes photos feel natural instead of staged.

My Honest Opinion

The families whose photos feel the most timeless usually aren’t the ones who overthought every detail.

They picked clothes they felt good in. They trusted me. They showed up ready to be together.

That’s the magic, if I’m allowed to use that word once.

Need Help? I’ve Got You.

When you book a summer family session with me, I’m happy to help you narrow things down, review options, or stop you from panic-buying six dresses at midnight.

Because this should feel fun. Not like a group project.
